Abstract

Topographical conditions and the vastness of the land make it difficult for farmer groups holding social forestry permits to monitor land conditions and map potential uses. Forest management strategies under the Social Forestry scheme need to be continuously monitored by forest farmer groups to identify and map areas with vegetation or locations that have potential for utilization. Current technological advancements have made remote sensing technology a primary tool for forest monitoring. Remote sensing image analysis and information technology have now evolved to incorporate cloud computing and big data, such as the Google Earth Engine platform. This community service initiative aims to provide understanding and training to the leaders of Social Forestry farmer groups so they can utilize technology to map vegetation locations, potential areas, and land cover within the Social Forestry areas they manage. The results of the community service activities indicate an increase in knowledge regarding the use of technology to support the optimization of social forestry area management. However, for the program’s sustainability, longer-term and more in-depth mentoring is needed so that forest farmer group members can produce maps of vegetation distribution and potential that can be utilized to improve the well-being of the group members.
