Jurnal Trias Politika recognizes the increasing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in research and writing. This policy establishes clear guidelines for the responsible and transparent use of generative AI by authors, reviewers, and editors. It aligns with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) position on authorship and AI tools.
Generative AI tools include, but are not limited to, large language models (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini), image generators, code generators, and other AI-assisted writing or content creation tools.
1. Authorship and Accountability
-
AI tools cannot be listed as authors. They cannot take responsibility for the work, provide final approval, or be accountable for the integrity of the publication.
-
Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the content, including any text, data, images, or references generated or assisted by AI.
-
All authors must approve the final version of the manuscript and agree to be accountable for all aspects of the work.
2. Disclosure Requirements for Authors
Authors must disclose any use of generative AI tools in the manuscript. This disclosure should be placed in a separate statement before the References section, with the heading "Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies".
The statement should include:
-
The name of the AI tool(s) used.
-
The purpose of use (e.g., language editing, literature search, code generation, data analysis).
-
A clear statement that the authors reviewed and verified all AI-generated content.
-
Confirmation that AI was not used to generate empirical data, conduct interviews, or replace author judgment.
Example:
During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [tool name] for [purpose, e.g., language editing and structural reorganization]. All AI-assisted text and references were reviewed and verified by the authors, who retain full responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of the manuscript. AI was not used to generate empirical data or conduct the research.
If no generative AI was used, authors may include a statement such as:
The authors declare that no generative AI tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript.
3. Prohibited Uses of Generative AI
The following uses of generative AI are strictly prohibited:
-
Generating or fabricating research data, results, or citations.
-
Creating fake references or misrepresenting sources.
-
Producing images or figures that misrepresent original data or findings.
-
Using AI to impersonate human authors or bypass peer review.
-
Uploading confidential manuscripts or peer-review materials to AI platforms without permission.
Any violation may result in rejection of the manuscript, retraction of the published article, or other disciplinary action in accordance with COPE guidelines.
4. Guidance for Reviewers
-
Confidentiality: Reviewers must not upload manuscripts, figures, or any part of the peer-review process to generative AI tools. Manuscripts are confidential and must be treated as such.
-
Disclosure: If a reviewer uses generative AI for language editing or minor assistance, they must inform the editor. The reviewer remains fully responsible for the review content.
-
Prohibited use: Reviewers must not use AI to generate review reports, evaluate manuscripts, or make editorial recommendations.
5. Guidance for Editors
-
Confidentiality: Editors must not upload manuscripts or peer-review materials to generative AI tools.
-
Editorial decisions: AI tools must not be used to make editorial decisions (accept, revise, reject).
-
Disclosure: If an editor uses AI for administrative tasks (e.g., checking grammar in correspondence), this must not compromise confidentiality or editorial independence.
-
Responsibility: Editors remain responsible for all editorial decisions and for ensuring the integrity of the review process.
6. AI in Figures, Images, and Multimedia
If generative AI is used to create or modify figures, images, or multimedia content, authors must:
-
Disclose the use of AI in the figure caption or acknowledgements.
-
Ensure that the content is accurate and does not misrepresent data.
-
Confirm that the use of AI does not infringe on copyright or ethical standards.
7. Detection and Verification
Jurnal Trias Politika may use AI detection tools to screen submissions for potential misuse. However, detection tools are not fully reliable, and authors are ultimately responsible for the originality and integrity of their work. The journal reserves the right to request additional evidence or clarification regarding AI use.
8. Consequences of Non-Compliance
Failure to comply with this policy may result in:
-
Rejection of the manuscript.
-
Retraction of the published article.
-
Notification to the authors’ institutions.
-
Other actions in accordance with COPE guidelines.
9. Alignment with COPE and International Standards
This policy is based on the COPE Core Practices and the COPE position on authorship and AI tools. It is also consistent with guidelines from other international bodies, including ICMJE, WAME, and STM.
